Heisman

What is the Heisman award?

I hear it is suppose to award the most outstanding player in college football, but the winner seldom is. It’s more like choosing a homecoming king or queen. The king/queen probably isn’t the smartest kid in school or the most athletic, but they are probably the most popular. In college football if someone is outstanding, they should have the best stats and probably be the best player regardless of the position. Unfortunately, for a bunch of athletes the Heisman award has become a popularity contest. It seems that you have to be good, have great stats, and be on a great team(if it’s an individual award then why does it matter what your team does?).

This year, the “experts” have people like Matt Ryan, Dennis Dixon, and Tim Tebow up for the award. Matt Ryan’s chances aren’t very good, because his team has lost a lot recently and he threw a bunch of interceptions. Dennis Dixon is now hurt and his team just lost, but he is a senior (why that matters I don’t know) so he still has a chance. Tim Tebow has by far the best stats, but he is a sophomore and his team lost 3 times.

So who is going to win? Your guess is as good as mine, but I heard a Heisman voter said it won’t be Tebow…no matter how good his stats are this year. He said that the other voters just won’t let a sophomore win.

If the award is that political, it’s no wonder a large number of the winners over the past 10 years aren’t big-time pro players.  It’s also not odd then that some of the winners never even made it on a pro squad or signed a pro contract (Charlie Ward, Eric Crouch).

My point is that the award is all hype and that it we would all be better served paying attention to things like the percent chance of rain, where you can buy the cheapest gas, and when the Buckle has the next sale on Lucy jeans (cause I want some).

It’s a silly little trophy that collects dust! All of those goofy awards are. But somehow, I still get roped into to watching the Emmy’s every year. I think I watch it for the dresses! Yea, that’s it!
