Get to the point!

It’s funny how we have progressed as a society and even more peculiar how it’s affected our communication.  In some ways we have more information then ever before and can access it quicker then if we lived in a library.  Socially, I think we have made an odd progression. I like to call it “getting to the point.”

Before Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, and Text messages there was a necessary step in talking with people that we skip completely over now.  It’s called small talk.

Conversations used to go like this, “Hey man what’s up?  You guys doing OK?  How’s your wife?  Your kids still playing on that baseball team?  Oh, great.  Hey I’ve got a question for you…is now a good time?”

Now we just immediately ask our questions, get to the point and say what we are thinking.  Nobody even has to ask us to give our opinion or ease into anything…it’s quick, curt, and straight to the point.

Confession: I love it.

Downside: There are a lot of people that don’t get the culture, that don’t Twitter, and only speak normal (over 40) people lingo.  In other words, there is a real possibility that there will be a generation that will literally be unable to communicate with another one.

I can only imagine what my grandmother would say if I wrote her a letter and penned “lol.”  She might actually beat me…after she asked how I was doing of course.
